The original Heritage Leather briefcase inspired by the German pastor and theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Bonhoeffer’s commitment to Christ would lead him to be one of the few Christian leaders in Germany to condemn and work against Hitler’s Nazi Germany. Like others, Bonhoeffer fled Nazi Germany to take a teaching position in the United States, but he would soon return to Germany saying,

I have made the mistake in coming to America. I must live through this difficult period of our national history with the Christian people of Germany. I will have no right to participate in the reconstruction of Christian life in Germany after the war if I do not share the trials of this time with my people.

Arrested by the Gestapo in August of 1943, Bonhoeffer was executed by the Nazi’s on April 9th 1945. He is revered today for his willingness to stand up to evil out of his allegiance to Christ and the future witness of the Christian church in Germany.

To learn more about the incredible life and witness of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, we recommend the biography, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet Spy by Eric Metaxas and Timothy Keller as well as Bonhoeffer’s classic works, The Cost of Discipleship and Life Together.

Our hope would be that those who carry this briefcase will be reminded that the heritage of our lives is often defined by how faithfully we follow Christ into the darkest corners of our broken world.
